The Emotional Logic Centre has won and successfully turned an ‘Awards for All’ grant of £10,000 into tools to assist families and individuals with new starts in life. The Devon based charity has used the grant to develop a lifelong learning package to guide people’s self-help as they adjust to difficult changes in the home or work situations.

Jennifer West, Project Lead of The Emotional Logic Centre states “The grant has opened up an exciting way for us to place training materials on the Internet, to develop home study CDs, podcasts and a DVD, all of which make the self-help learning more accessible”. He continues, “Within the materials we have made it possible to talk with a community tutor (an individual who is trained to help others adjust) who can guide learners to the most relevant parts of the materials for their situations.”

During this last year, seven tutors have been involved in a variety of projects, knowing they can now provide ongoing support at a distance via the lifelong learning package. Emotional Logic Projects have now run in Plymouth, Truro, across Devon and in the Birmingham area. In addition, a tutor provides support to NHS staff who are stressed by the uncertainties of their future.

Emotional Logic is a totally new approach to managing disappointments and change constructively, with less distress and more energy to see decisions through, by building relationships along the way. The long-term hope of the Emotional Logic Centre is to invest in the future generation by strengthening families and friendships during various sorts of resettlement through economic pressures and conflicts. It is a way to equip Society to be not just Big, but emotionally resilient and supportive as well.

The Emotional Logic Centre has worked with a number of organisations in the UK to introduce its methods including a pilot in General Practice for patients as an alternative to counselling or medication, and in a church to provide pastoral support in its local community. In addition, several projects are running in school settings, within youth counselling and in Family Therapy. Foreign links have also been made, so Emotional Logic Learning Clubs are available in Siberia (post-communism) and in Zimbabwe (supporting those who work with AIDS orphans).

The Emotional Logic Centre would like to thank ‘Awards for All’ for the grant an enabling them to produce an exciting and accessible lifelong learning programme.
