Plymouth Coptic Orthodox Church opening – Saturday 10th December 2011 at 10am
An opening Mass will be performed by the Coptic (Egyptian) Bishop Anthony in the newly acquired building of Worship, The Coptic Church, Tamar Science Park, Derriford (Former Kingdom Hall).
The Coptic Church is the oldest denomination of Christianity in the world. It is based in Egypt and was pioneered by Saint Mark, who wrote the Gospel of that name. A congregation of over 100 has been active in Plymouth for many years, but did not have their own place of worship. That has now been rectified when local Priest, Father Polykarpos El-Samueily in conjunction with ‘Churches Together in Plymouth’ tracked down the Derriford former Kingdom Hall for sale. Father Polykarpos has worked with his Plymouth congregation to make ready for this great and historic day in the city. Especially whilst Coptic Christians are under great persecution in their Egyptian homeland at present.
His Grace Bishop Anthony is the Coptic Bishop for most of Britain, whilst Father Polykarpos had the experience of spending 3 years as a hermit monk living in a small cave in the Egyptian desert. He says they were the best years of his life! Now they are able to call the faithful to worship in their own unique way, and from this Sunday onwards, Mass will be said every Sunday at 10.30am and all are welcome.
