PRAYER - THE KEY TO CITY TRANSFORMATION

Pray Plymouth: Plymouth Guild

Wednesday 16th November 2011

George Penderleith

Part of the City since 1907 Plymouth Guild’s reason for existence is to support people and for over 100 years have provided information, advice and practical support.

From the beginning the Lord Mayer has been President and there are strong ties with the Council.

Plymouth Guild has initiated many enabling/helping groups and as they get bigger they sometimes take over the running of their own organisation. At present they are running, among other things, the Hearing and Sight Centre, the Disabiliity Information and Advice Centre (DIAC), the Volunteer Centre and Patient Support Services.

There are 40 staff and 70 volunteers.

Prayer Points:

  • Thank God for the existence of the Guild with many Christians involved in its work
  • Pray that it will be of help to the people of Plymouth, especially in these difficult times
  • Pray for George in his role as Chief Executive of the Guild and his involvement with the Strategic Partnership, sitting on the 2020 executive. He also is a Pastor and has a family! Pray for the right balance in his life and wisdom in his decisions.
  • Recently George and Chris Clewer of Ctip have started to get to know each other and explore areas of possible overlapping and working together. Please pray that they will know God’s plan and purpose in this.
  • There is growing social need in the City and the Guild has many demands upon its resources. Pray that resources will be steady and even grow and that the Church in Plymouth will be further mobilised to find ways of serving the community and help lessen the distress and pain caused by unemployment.

Chris and Nicky Uglow

Schools in Cornwall particularly are opening up to the ministry, and the team take lessons during the week and then have a Friday evening concert where the Gospel is shared.

Plymouth schools have not been as quick to welcome them in but they had a very good week at the All Saints Academy, Plymouth with St Pancreas church working with them and helping with the follow-up. Plans are being put in place for a visit to Lipson College, Plymouth

They have been invited in to schools in Camelford, Liskeard, Helston and schools are interested in Bude, Newquay, Looe and several other towns.

They have been given the use of office space in Launceston, free and recently have moved to a flat nearby.

  • Thanksgiving for the funding that has been coming in, the schools opening up, the office premises and the flat.
  • Thanksgiving for the team working together well and prayer for all to continue to grow in faith and in bonding together. One of the team members is leaving next June and a new
  • member needs to be found.

Pray Plymouth: Dartmoor Prison

Wednesday 5th October 2011

Alpha Courses – Anwen

Over the years we have prayed for the prison and seen God do some exciting things! Quite a bit of change: Bill Birdwood the senior chaplain has left and been replaced by Louise who is working with the multi-faith chaplaincy. The No. 1 governor has gone and a temporary replacement has come. Numbers in Dartmoor have fallen to less than 500 but plans are afoot to move more prisoners in which means changing the make-up of prisoners in the various wings.

Alpha continues in two wings but not in the third at the moment as terrorist clearance is now necessary which the volunteers do not have. In addition no speakers can go in as they are going to need terrorist clearance as well.

Points for prayer:

  • that in the midst of change the Word of God will continue to go forth under God’s anointing and that many will be mightily helped and changed lives result
  • For a new governor of God’s choice and for the relocating of prisoners to be done sensitively, with wisdom and for peace to reign. For prison officers that are being moved back or in to Dartmoor to work with the increased numbers, that they will accept the change and fit in well
  • For Anwen and her team of volunteers – that they will be encouraged and be a great encouragement. For wisdom in handling the group discussions and for a constant supply of compassion and God’s love for the prisoners
  • For Louise in her chaplaincy role – again for anointing and encouragement and wisdom in working with the other chaplains of differing faiths.
  • for the terrorist clearance to go ahead swiftly so that the work is not slowed down
  • There is to be another prison inspection soon. Pray for a good outcome
  • Prisoner John has died recently. Please pray for his family, especially his mother
  • As always, the needs of released prisoners is still a big issue and one that needs the involvement of the Christian community.

Pray Plymouth: The Herald

Wednesday 28th September 2011

Bill Martin, Editor

Started in 1895 as the Western Evening Herald, the paper has been going ever since, even in these turbulent days when so many local dailies are becoming weekly papers.

Bill is Devon born and bred, the son of a farming couple. The paper sells 30,000 a day, 6 days a week and has a staff of 27.

The Herald acts as a Voice for Plymouth in championing the city both locally and in Westminster when necessary.  It looks out for the democratic rights of the people and questions council, business and other decisions where some issue is at stake.  It gives local information hard to find elsewhere, such as chemists’ hours.

It acts as a pillar of the community, especially in times of crisis when it provides a rallying point and a voice. The role of the editor carries much out-of-sight work, in setting the tone of the paper, taking a well-considered position on controversial issues, promoting certain values and providing sponsorship for local causes

Points for thanksgiving and prayer:

  • that we still have a daily local paper helping express community and local participation
  • for an editor with thoughtful values and a care for the city
  • pray for great wisdom in what is promoted and wise and godly advisors
  • for the paper to hold its own and increase in readership and prosperity
  • for the sense of community to be regained in every area of the city

Redeeming Our Communities Launch at the Pavilions

20th October

“Redeeming Our Communities (ROC) is a national charity founded in 2004 with outlets and partnerships across the UK. The aim of ROC is to be a catalyst for community transformation by promoting partnerships which open up more opportunities for crime and disorder reduction, and enhanced community cohesion.

They bring together community groups, churches, the police, the fire service, local authorities and voluntary agencies to encourage them to work together in positive partnerships for practical change. As a result, statutory agencies have improved access to the support of community/church groups, and thousands of volunteers are enabled to better serve the needs of their community. This idea is proving to be even more valuable in the light of the current economic climate and the Big Society. “

Planning for this is going well. Everybody who wants to attend needs to get a free ticket by logging on to the website.

Praise for:

  • the team which has gathered to help produce this event
  • enthusiasm of the Police and Fire Services
  • meeting of the Budget needs
  • Debra Green’s involvement
  • those who are exhibitors on the night
  • For Inspector Norman Amey who is working fulltime on this event
  • For South-west regional involvement

Prayer points

  • the programme on the night churches and Christians to come and catch the vision
  • Regional agency leaders
  • David Martin running the programme
  • Debra leading the event
  • Involvement after the event
  • structure of the follow-up
  • for Communities to be Redeemed!

Pray Plymouth: Plymouth Foodbank

Wed 7th September 2011

Eunice

The Foodbank is run from the Crown Centre in Stonehouse and is a project of Plymouth Methodist Mission Circuit. The inside of the building has just been refurbished and there is an open day for anyone interested on Monday Sept 12th between 9.30 and 12.30 in the morning and between 5 and 7 in the evening.

www.plymouthfoodbank.co.uk

The Foodbank distributes tins and dried food which the Plymouth community donates. 88 agencies give out red vouchers which qualifies somebody to ask for a food parcel. In addition to giving out food there is always a listening ear and advice as to other agencies which may offer further help. The Foodbank aims to show God’s love in practical action. Occasionally there is an opportunity to pray for folk.

A Job Club is also run from the Centre and classes teaching simple cooking and other skills. Sometimes people who have received food come back and donate goods or volunteer to help.

Prayer points:

  • give thanks for the refurbishment and for the many volunteers
  • give thanks for the opportunities to provide services local people need
  • new volunteers are always welcome and needed
  • pray that the right support is given to each person
  • for wisdom in helping people grow in their faith and relationship with God
  • for time to do all the administrative and financial work
  • for funding to keep the projects going
