Red Cross is recruiting a welcoming host community for Refugee Families
My name is Kim, and I work with the Red Cross in Plymouth. We are recruiting passionate Plymouthians to be members of a welcoming Host Community for Refugee Families.
The aim of the Host Network is to provide community integration support to newly arriving refugee families to support them to get to know the local area, community events, new people, activities, make bonds with those with similar hobbies and interests and get to know the transport systems. In my experience this usually ends in cultural and language exchanges, lots of laughs, a warmth from making new bonds with people and usually food. Think cream teas on the Barbican and some Plymouth history, trips on the local ferries, trains to neighbouring towns, visits to our beautiful beaches and moorlands, all the best parks for kids, community festivals and fetes, bring and share picnics, activities for kids and adults and local attractions, why not the cinema for the latest films? There are so many great things to do in Plymouth. Everyone is welcome to apply, families, couples, friends, or a single person, you will meet families of all different shapes and sizes, no family is the same.
The project is fully supported with training, expenses and continued support for families and host buddies. There are opportunities to go on residential language holidays to learn new things and new experiences to develop the understanding and experiences of both newly arrived families and the host community.
If you are interested in reaching out to be a good neighbour (not a volunteer) and building bridges in our thriving Plymouth community then get in touch or pass along to friends, family and others who may be interested in supporting new families in Plymouth.
