Weekend Volunteers needed at Derriford Hospital Chaplaincy

The Department of Pastoral & Spiritual Care (Chaplaincy) at Derriford Hospital are in urgent need of new weekend volunteers to help patients attend Chapel each Sunday.

This ministry facilitates the transport and accompaniment of patients in wheelchairs from wards to the chapel on Sunday mornings for a 9.15am service, staying with them for the service and then taking them back to the wards afterwards.  The whole process lasts about 2 hours from 8.30 – 10.30am once every 6 weeks.  In addition there is a need to spend about 2 hours the morning of the previous day, going round the wards to gather a list of patients who wish to attend.  It is preferable but not vital that you volunteer for both Saturday and Sunday, so if you only feel able to offer one of the days, please ask.  However the real pressure is often on Sundays when there are not enough volunteers to fulfil the Saturday requests.  We have had a decline in numbers of longer standing volunteers and it is now getting to the stage where it is frequently difficult to find enough people to take patients to chapel on some Sundays.

This is a vital and valuable role enabling patients who are dislocated from their own churches or who perhaps are seeking some peace and support, to attend a short worship service. If you are able to offer or would simply like to find out further what would be involved, please contact Revd. Jan Collis as soon as possible, on 01752 245255– email j.collis@nhs.net  This role will be subject to an enhanced DBS clearance, occupational health checks and 2 references.
